New York, NY:
Marvel Studios’ Infinity War is a major milestone in blockbuster filmmaking, concluding a narrative arc from 10 years and 18 films by combining an unprecedented cast of characters never seen before on film together. Perception was approached by the filmmakers to design an opening title that would set the stage for this sprawling epic.
“Our starting point was ‘tone.’ In order to design the title animation we wanted to understand what sort of story the filmmakers were telling in Avengers: Infinity War.” said Perception’s Senior Producer Eric Daly. “This movie finds a team of heroes spread across the galaxy who have all been through their own battles and struggles, but when this team comes together you feel an undeniable sense of hope. Our job was to capture that spirit in the design and animation.”
Perception’s design process began with exploration, working with Directors Joe and Anthony Russo and the Marvel Studios executive team to find something appropriate for a film of this scale. “The title had to feel massive,” said Perception’s Art Director Russ Gautier. “We spent a lot of time refining the scale, animation and camera move to make it seem as big as possible.” Perception VFX Director Doug Appleton adds “It was important for us to maintain some consistency with past Avengers films so that each title feels like one part of a larger whole. We used the same ‘Avengers’ type seen in previous films, but distressed the surface to suggest its history”.
The opening title to Avengers: Infinity War continues Perception’s ongoing relationship with Marvel Studios. In addition to the opening title, Perception has contributed design-driven conceptual development to this film, as well as the 6th implementation of the latest Marvel Studios logo animation. While Avengers: Infinity War marks 10 years since Iron Man, Perception looks forward to the continuation of Marvel Studios’ unprecedented approach to blockbuster filmmaking.
